Materials Handling Equipment – Related accidents hit the headlines

Investigations are under way after a Morrison’s employee was trapped under a piece of materials handling equipment and was badly injured at their store in Guiseley. The Emergency Services arrived after an accident in the loading bay. The employee, a woman in her 60s, was trapped under the equipment and had to be released by firefighters at the scene. The woman suffered severe injuries to her leg and was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

Also in the news, a freight company has been fined £50,000 after an employee suffered injuries when he was hit by falling pallets. The incident that occurred last year caused a broken vertebrae and the employee is now unable to carry out even the lightest duties without significant pain. The incident was caused when a piece of materials handling equipment toppled when it struck a pothole, tipping the load of wooden pallets on the worker.

These stories highlight the need for preventative measures when dealing with heavy loads and heavy duty equipment such as stackers, high lifters and electric pallet trucks and shows just how easily accidents can occur. Pallet trucks not only require regular maintenance but also a safe working environment as this troubling story shows.
